New York City’s Mayor announced a plan in February for the city to help victims who suffer from 9/11 illness resulting from the World Trade Center attacks and collapse.
The site was understandably an extremely toxic one in the hours and weeks after the devastating World Trade Center attack and collapse of the buildings. This affected not only rescue workers and cleanup crews, but also those who lived and worked in the area at that time, breathing the toxic air.
On February 13, New York Public Radio reported on the mayor’s plan, which included the following:
appointing a coordinator for World Trade Center health problems; lobbying Washington for more funding, and setting up a billion-dollar Victims Compensation Fund.
Though many have commended the city and the mayor for taking these actions, others are wondering why they were not implemented much sooner.
