As many as 37 people suffered minor injuries and one person was seriously hurt when a Staten Island ferry boat hit a pier as it approached the St. George Ferry Terminal, on Saturday.
Authorities said the cause appeared to be mechanical failure. The pilots were unable to pull back on the throttle as the vessel was approaching the dock from Manhattan, according to the NY Times.
Some passengers were transported to the hospital by ambulance while others were treated at the scene, said Fire Department officials.
In 2003, the same ferry was involved in another crash, also at the same terminal, that killed at least 10 passengers and injured 42 others, many critically.
