A tanker truck smashed in to the rear end of a stopped Honda Civic on Saturday, killing one woman and injuring another woman and child, stargazette.com reported.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Routes 2005 and 2022 in Covington, PA. Barry K. Smith, 39, of Columbia Cross Roads drove his tanker truck into the rear end of a Honda, driven by Diane McKinley, 51, of Renovo, as she stopped in the northbound lane of Route 2005 awaiting a traffic opening to make a left turn. The force of the impact sent the Honda shooting forward about 100 feet.

Ambulances transported McKinley and her passenger Mildred Barnard, 74, of Lock Haven to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Wellsboro. A helicopter transported a 5-year-old child, who was in the back seat of McKinley’s Honda, to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Doctors pronounced Barnard dead at the hospital. Conditions for McKinley and the child were unavailable.

Smith, the tanker truck driver, was uninjured in the accident.
