Two New York state troopers were injured in a car accident on Friday. According to authorities, a driver suspected of speeding allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel, slamming into both their police cruiser and the vehicle they had pulled over.

The crash occurred just after 4:10 a.m. after troopers Anthony Longarello and Jose Vargas pulled over a Honda on the westbound grand Central Parkway. As they were talking with the driver of the vehicle, a 2008 Pathfinder struck the officers’ vehicle, causing the police car to crash into the Honda.

Longarello underwent surgery for a broken leg; Vargas was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released.

The driver of the Pathfinder was cited for speeding and driving across hazardous markings. He was also charged with marijuana possession.
