A Long Island man and convicted drunk driver whose vehicle was outfitted with an anti-DUI driving technology ditched his car and rented another, only to crash the rental while intoxicated.

The driver, 27, is in critical condition after losing control of the vehicle Sunday morning and striking a utility pole in Brentwood, according to the Stony Brook University Medical Center.

After a previous DWI conviction, the driver agreed to have his car equipped with an ignition interlock device, Suffolk County Police said. The “blow and go” technology tests for alcohol in a driver’s breath before the car can start.

Police are uncertain when he acquired the rental car. The driver is expected to be arraigned on a DWI charge.
