A fiery car crash on Monday night claimed a Selden man and his two small children, according to officials.

The father, 44, his stepson, 5, and 10-month-old daughter, died in a Jeep that was fully engulfed in flames. Officials are unsure what caused the driver to veer off the roadway, strike a tree, and burst into flames.

An off-duty New York City police officer and a trucker attempted to rescue the occupants but the vehicle was already engulfed in flames.

The accident occurred in Hauppauge on the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway just east of exit 56.

The accident is under investigation. Police said they plan to look at Department of Transportation traffic cameras to help determine what caused the accident. #
