Chrysler Recalls 144,000 Dodge Ram and Journey Vehicles

Chrysler Group LLC has issued three separate recalls totaling more than 144,000 vehicles for safety defects that could result in a crash or injury in a crash.

The first recall involves 22,274 of 2008-2011 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 pickups because the left ball stud on the tie rod may weaken and break, which could result in a loss of steering. Chrysler notified the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) in a letter that the company has received 86 customer complaints of tie rod replacements due to fracture of the ball stud. The manufacturer was unaware of any accidents or injuries caused by the defect.

Chrysler also issued a recall of 65,180 Dodge Journey model year 2009 vehicles. According to the manufacturer, in the event of a crash the side airbag may not deploy because wires within the front door wire harnesses may wear and break, interrupting the circuits for the side impact sensors. The company knew of no injuries associated with the airbag failure.

The third recall affects 56,611 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups from 2011. In these vehicles, the rear axle bearing may seize, causing the vehicle to stall and potentially result in a crash. The company investigated after three reports by consumers of a grinding noise coming from the rear axle bearing.
