Slushy sidewalks are hard to avoid this time of the year, and for some it can be life-threatening. In fact, emergency rooms have seen a spike in elderly slip and fall patients.

The most common injuries are to the hand, elbow and shoulder. And, head injuries for those whose reflexes were too slow.

Most important, says E.R. Dr. Michael Stern of NY-Presbyterian Hospital, is to move slowly. And to make sure you’re wearing footwear that doesn’t easily slip.
