Suntech Enterprises Inc., in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of SunKids Convertible Cribs because of entrapment and suffocation hazards.
The sides of the crib are made of mesh that expands, creating a gap between the side and the crib’s mattress if it’s not zipped into place, or a gap between the side and an added mattress. A young child can slip into this gap and become entrapped or suffocate. Also, the crib’s drop side can fail to fully latch posing a fall hazard to young children.
To date, there have not been any reported injuries. However, CPSC learned of the death of a 5-month-old child in August 2008 – that involved an identical crib from another company – when the child became entrapped between the mesh side and mattress and suffocated.
Included in the recall are SunKids convertible crib/playpen/bassinet/bed – model number PY256. The cribs were sold at small juvenile retailers in California, New Jersey and New York from January 2007 through October 2008.
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled products immediately and to return them to the store they were purchased from to receive a full refund.
