Rechargeable batteries sold with portable DVD/CD/MP3 players, imported by Coby Electronics Corp., have been voluntarily recalled because they can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
To this date, the company has received ten reports of the batteries overheating, including eight reports of fires that have resulted in property damage. There have been no reports of injury.
The recall involves Coby DVD/CD/MP3 players with product number TF-DVD- 8501. The rechargeable batteries sold with the units have serial numbers that begin with “HY.”
The batteries were sold nationwide at discount, electronic, toy and office stories and distributors of electronic products from January 2007 to September 2009.
Consumers should contact Coby Electronics for a free replacement. In the meantime, the recalled batteries should be removed from the unit immediately however, they can be used with AC or DC power adapters.
