A major pet food manufacturer has issued a recall of dog food distributed in twelve states because of the potential for pets and their owners to contract salmonellosis, an infection with the bacteria Salmonella.

Diamond Pet Foods of Meta, MO is recalling Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food distributed to the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia due to a possible Salmonella contamination.

“Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product,” the company said in a release.

The company says no illnesses have been reported.

Dogs eating this pet food can develop salmonellosis and exhibit symptoms such as decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain, which can worsen to include diarrhea, bloody diarrhea and vomiting if left untreated. If your dog has eaten the Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food below and is exhibiting any of those symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian.

Salmonella is zoonotic, meaning it can pass between pets and humans, so people in contact with an infected pet may contract the disease without handling this pet food directly, and people infected with Salmonella can pass the infection to their pet.

Symptoms of salmonellosis in HUMANS include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea

While the infection in humans usually lasts only 4-7 days, several months may pass before bowel habits return to normal. Young children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals are most likely to develop severe salmonellosis infections. People who recover are at risk for developing long-term side effects that can last months or years from a condition called reactive arthritis, characterized by pain in the joints, irritation in the eyes and painful urination. People who suspect they have a salmonellosis infection should consult their physician.

Diamond Pet Foods advises consumers with any of these products to discontinue use and discard. They may call 800-442-0402 for information on obtaining a refund.

Actually, Diamond also packages premium dog food at the Gaston facility. Taste of the Wild (5 star) Natural Balance, Chicken soup for the Soul, and Canidae to mention a few... yes they do have an entry level dog food that has corn meal as its first ingredient, but so does most of the grocery store brands that 90% of you buy everyday....Food for Thought!!!
