Parents who have a wooden bunk bed for their children should be aware of a huge bunk bed recall because their children are at risk of injury.
Dorel Asia SRL has recalled 466,700 wooden bunk beds because the wooden side rails can split. These side rails run from headboard to footboard and hold the mattress in place. If the side rail splits, the bunk bed could collapse, posing a risk to children on both the top and lower bunk or near the bed.
About 445,000 of the bunk beds affected are in the United States, with the remaining 21,700 in Canada. Walmart, Kmart and Target sold these Dorel Asia bunk beds in their retail stores and online through their websites from September 2004 until October 2009 for about $190.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the agency and Dorel Asia have received 23 reports of cracking or breakage of the side rails, including seven instances that caused injuries.
“At Dorel Asia, your family’s safety is our top priority,” the company said in a safety notice. “As a leading juvenile products provider, Dorel Asia honors its responsibility to parents and caregivers to offer products with the highest quality and reliability standards for its users. Our products are regularly tested by independent testing laboratories to certify they meet and exceed all government and industry standards and provide the safest product possible. “
Parents can identify these recalled bunk beds by locating a white label on one of the bunk bed rails with the model number, manufacture date, manufacturer’s phone number and the words “Made in Vietnam.”
