Reports of smoke and fire from GE Zoneline Air Conditioners and Heaters have prompted the company to recall the units.

GE Appliances and Lighting of Louisville, KY and the manufacturer Sharp Corp. of Japan have received four reports of smoke and/or fire with this product. In two of the incidents, fire extended beyond the unit and caused property damage.

The company has determined that an electrical component in the heating system can fail and catch fire.

Under recall are GE Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and packaged terminal heat pumps manufactured between January 2010 and March 2011. These types of units are most often used in apartments and commercial space such as hotel rooms.

According to a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall affects about 90,600 air conditioners and heaters. GE’s authorized representatives and HVAC distributors sold these products nationwide from March 2010 through March 2011 for between $1,000 and $1,200.

Consumers can identify these recalled products by the GE logo on the panel door and by removing the front panel to find the following serial and model numbers on the rating plate.
