GE Appliances has issued a voluntary recall of more than 1 million dishwashers due to an electrical failure in the heating element which can pose a fire hazard.

To this date, the company has received 15 reports of failures in the heating element, which includes seven reports of fire, in which three resulted in extensive property damage. There have been no reports of injuries.

The recall involves the following dishwashers: GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brand. The CPSC News Release includes a detail list of the recalled items include the affected brands, model numbers and serial numbers. They were sold through authorized builder distributors and appliance dealers from March 2006 to August 2009.

The agency urges consumers to discontinue using the dishwashers and to disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker. For all dishwashers, consumers contact GE for a free in-home repair or one of two rebates. The recalled dishwashers should not be returned to the place of purchase.
