Empress Arts Ltd., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled Children’s Hooded Sweaters because the drawstrings pose a strangulation hazard to children.
The recalled sweaters are cream colored with a blue stripe at the waist and wrists and a blue ball on the hood with blue buttons with model number BL1048, sizes 2T. The sweaters were sold under the brand name “Empress Arts.” And “Empress Baby” can be found on the sweater tag.
The CPSC released consumer guidelines in February 1996, to help prevent children from getting strangled or entangled on the neck and waist by drawstrings in upper garment items such as sweatshirts.
The agency has received 27 reports of deaths and 70 non-fatal incidents involving the entanglement of children’s clothing and drawstrings from 1985 to June 2008. However, the company has not received any reports of injury relating to the current recall.
Consumers are advised to immediately remove the drawstrings to eliminate a choking and strangulation hazard.
