The Boy Scouts of America issued a recall of plastic badges that are used to award Cub Scouts, because they may contain excessive levels of lead in the paint. Lead can be toxic if ingested by small children.
Kahoot Products Inc., the company that supplies the badges, notified the national Scout organization earlier this week about its concerns that the totem badges may contain lead levels in excess of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards in the paint.
The recalled badges, made in China, are part of the “Immediate Recognition Kit,” which has been distributed nationwide to an estimated 1.7 million Cub Scouts.
The recalled badges are for Cub Scouts who are seven and eight years old. The badges have a yellow and blue border and display a picture of a bear and wolf that reads “Progress Toward Ranks.”
The CPSC will be making an official recall announcement with instructions for how to return the badges. Consumers are advised to take the badges away from small children.
