Bunk Beds Recalled By Consumer Poduct Safety Commission

Dorel Asia, working in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, recently issued a recall of 466,700 wooden bunk beds because the side rails that run from the headboard to the footboard – that hold the mattress in place – can break apart and cause the bed to collapse, posing a fall hazard.

To date, the company has received 23 reports of the side rails breaking or cracking which included seven reports of minor cuts and bruises.

The recalled bunk beds were sold at Kmart, Target and Walmart stores, as well as online, from September 2004 through September 2009. A list of model numbers affected by the recall can be found on the CPSC Web site.

Consumers are urged to contact Dorel Asia immediately to receive a repair kit free of charge. While waiting for the repair kit, the bunk beds should be taken down and used as separate twin beds to prevent injury.

The CPSC has specific standards that manufacturer’s must follow to reduce the risk that children may be injured, or even killed, from being trapped between an upper bunk and a wall, in openings below the guardrails, or in the openings of the ends of the bunk beds.
