Thousands of consumers are injured during the holiday months of November and December due to falls, fires and other incidents associated with holiday decorations.

According to the CPSC, since 2009, holiday decoration-related injuries have spiked at a rate of 1,000 per year from 12,000 accidents in 2009 to 13,000 in 2010 and 14,000 in 2011. To prevent further injuries, fires and incidents from occurring, the following tips should be followed.

Christmas Safety Tips

If you have a real tree, be sure to water it often. Several fires are caused by dried out trees.

Holiday lights should be tested and certified. Ensure they are safe and free of damage.

Candles should be used with caution and away from items such as drapes or trees that can pose a fire hazard.

When putting up decorations, be sure to have a helper on the ground if you are on a ladder. Falls are common during the decorating process but can be avoided.
