I have a Labrador retriever that I absolutely adore. He’s very cute and chubby so the kids always want to share their food with him. That said there are several people-foods that should never be fed to pets.
In fact, certain people-foods contain toxins that don’t affect humans but can sicken, and in some cases even kill pets. Other foods may cause upset stomach because they have trouble digesting those foods.
People-Foods That Pose Risk To Your Pets
Grapes & Raisins: Large amounts of either food can lead to kidney failure, although the reason is unclear.
Fatty foods: Bacon, deep-fried foods and fat trimmings to name a few foods that should be avoided. Not only are these foods unhealthy, they can upset pets’ stomachs.
Macadamia Nuts: These nuts, even in small amounts, are toxic to dogs, but like grapes, the reason is unclear.
Coffee, Chocolate and Sodas: These items are harmful, especially to dogs. Ingesting these foods can cause diarrhea and vomiting, excessive thirst and urination, tremors and even death.
Garlic and Onions: Compounds in the onion family can damage dogs’ red blood cells if ingested in large quantities. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of people-foods that are dangerous to pets. For more information, visit the ASPCA Web site.
