Do you know what the term iatrogenic means? is defined as “induced in a patient by a physician’s activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially to pertain to a complication of treatment.” In the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a Dr. Starfield has documented an estimation of how many iatrogenic caused deaths occur each year. His report shows that 106,000 deaths are the result of Non-error, negative effects of drugs. 80,000 deaths are from infections in hospitals, 45,000 deaths from other errors in hospitals, 12,000 deaths from Unnecessary Surgery, 7,000 from medication errors in hospitals totaling 225,000 people that die each year from iatrogenic means. Interestingly, for you statisticians, this 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer.
