Soy Bean Sprouts Recalled For Possible Listeria Contamination

Soy Bean Sprouts have been recalled by Chang Farms because of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recalled products include 10 lb bags (bulk) of soy sprouts and 12 oz. plastic bags (retail) of soy sprouts, labeled under the Chang Farm Brand and have a “Sell-By” date of July 17, 2009.

The affected products were distributed to wholesalers and retail stores throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

To date, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recalled Soy Sprouts.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms that appear similar to flu and may include headache, stiffness, a high fever, and nausea.

This type of bacterial contamination is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.

In May, Bean and Soy sprouts produced at Chang Farms were also recalled for Listeria.

In 2008, twelve people died of food poisoning linked to tainted deli meats produced at a plant owned by Maple Leaf Foods, according to Canadian health officials.
