Sally Jackson Cheese has issued a voluntary recall of its cheeses due to a possible E. coli contamination. The FDA, in cooperation with other state and local public health agencies, urges consumers to dispose the tainted cheese in a closed plastic bag in the trash and to not consume it.
To date, eight people have been stricken with an identical strain of E. coli O157:H7. The eight are residents of Oregon, Washington, Vermont and Minnesota. Onset of their illnesses ranged from September into November. One person required hospitalization.
E. coli O157:H7 can develop diarrhea (often bloody) and abdominal cramps for 3 to 4 days, after ingesting the organism, but some illnesses may last longer and can sometimes cause kidney failure and even death.
Anyone who experiences these symptoms should seek emergency medical care.
The recalled cheese was distributed in several states including: California, Connecticut, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington. For more information, refer to the FDA News Release.
