PMI Nutrition, LLC issued a voluntary recall of 20 lb. bags of Red Flannel Cat Formula cat food due to a possible Salmonella contamination.

There have been no reports of illness related to this recall, to date. The recall was issued as a precautionary measure after testing found a possible contamination.

Salmonella can cause animals to become sick if they ingest the tainted food and can also pose a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. This risk can be eliminated by washing their hands immediately and thoroughly after having contact with the products or areas that were exposed to these products.

Symptoms of salmonella illness in pets can be diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting and lethargic. Some pets will experience less severe symptoms such as decreased appetite but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals as well as humans.

The recalled cat food was sold in several states including New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and more.
