The FDA has linked jerky pet treats to a mysterious outbreak that has led to several hundred sick cats and dogs that have resulted in 580 pet deaths.
The treats, made in China, are jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, dried fruit and/or potatoes. The agency is mainly concerned because China as well as its manufacturers of pet foods is not held to US standards that requires the listing of country of origin for each product.
Veterinarians and pet owners are urged to contact the FDA if their pet has been sick and to also contact FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator within their state.
The agency has tested some 1,100 jerky pet treat samples, since 2011, in conjunction with many laboratories across the country. The FDA is also working with regulators and scientists in China to get cause of the issue. With so many pet treats available on the market, it’s simply not worth the risk to feed your pet jerky.
