Papaya Maradol Recalled Due To Salmonella Risk

Several cases of Papaya Maradol, Caribeña Brand papayas have been recalled by Caribe Produce because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

To this date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

The recall involves papayas packed in 35 lb. cartons marked with the brand “Caribeña” and “Product of Mexico.” They were sold individually and each piece of papaya bears the following label: “3112 CARIBEÑA Papaya MARADOL PRODUCT OF MEXICO.” A copy of the label can be viewed on the FDA Web site.

The recalled fruit was distributed in Bronx, New York and in wholesale and retail stores from May 14^th to May 17^th 2012.
