An estimated 1 in 6 Americans people get sick with foodborne diseases each year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While some 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 people die.

Causes of Foodborne Illness

Common causes of foodborne illness include, but are not limited to, bacterial, viruses and parasites. Common symptoms include dehydration, stomach cramps, nausea and fever. There are many illnesses but Listeria, E coli and Salmonella are a few of the most common illnesses.

The most common cause of foodborne illness is harmful bacteria which may be on certain foods when they are purchased. Raw meat, for instance, can become contaminated during slaughter. While fruits and vegetables, may become contaminated during the growing process. But contamination can also happen in your kitchen if food is left out for longer than 2 hours at room temperature.
