Wholesome Spice, of Brooklyn, New York, in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Health, announced a recall of Crushed red pepper in 25-pound boxes due to possible salmonella contamination.
Salmonella infection can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
The recall involves boxes of pepper sold from April 6 through January 20 in the Northeast. The product was not sold directly to consumers.
According to a news release on the FDA Web site, “It cannot be determined at this time if this product has been related to any illnesses to date.”
The company is working with the FDA to determine how the contamination occurred.
