CooperVision has issued a contact lens recall for nearly five million Avaira Sphere brand contact lenses, in addition to Avaira Toric lenses recalled in August.
Users of Avaira lenses have reported severe eye pain, injury and blurry vision associated with these contact lenses. In some cases, people required medical treatment.
The manufacturer has determined the defective contact lenses have a silicone oil residue leftover from the manufacturing process.
In August, CooperVision recalled Avaira Toric lenses for the same defect. The company made a second recall announcement in October that it was “continuing” the recall after pressure from the FDA that the company needed to make more of an effort to warn consumers.
MSNBC.com reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received forty reports of problems with the lenses.
"The company is confident we found the problem and have taken corrective action to fix the problem," Christine Moench, Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance said in a press release. "The health and safety of our customers is our top priority."
