At a time where more and more people are starting to focus on their weight and healthy eating habits, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing updating the Nutrition Facts label on food packages.

The Nutrition Facts label was first introduced 20 years ago to help consumers make smart food choices to assist maintaining healthy dietary practices.

If the proposed changes are adopted they would include:

New Design to show calories and serving sizes more prominent to emphasize parts of the label that are important in addressing current public health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

A greater understanding of Nutrition Science: including “information about “added sugars.”

Updated serving size requirements to include: packaged foods, including drinks, which are typically eaten in one sitting, be labeled as a single serving and that calorie and nutrient information is declared for the entire package.

For more detailed information, including a photo of the current food label vs. the proposed labels, please visit the Consumer Updates section of the FDA Website.

FDA issued two proposed rules on the nutrition facts label. The rules are published in the Federal Register (FR) so that members of the public can review them and send their comments to us. The public is given a period of time to submit their comments. You can comment electronically on regulations.gov or visit the FDA Website to do so.
