A tractor-trailer caused an eight-vehicle collision on Interstate 295 Wednesday morning, injuring two people.

Octavio Villegas, 46, of Jersey City, NJ, failed to brake in his tractor-trailer when traffic ahead of him slowed for a construction zone on I-295, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police.

Villegas veered left, slamming into a concrete barrier, then jumped back to the center lane where his tractor-trailer slammed into the back of a Ford Escort driven by Kea Williams, 33, of Magnolia, NJ. The impact propelled Williams’ Escort into the rear of a box truck driven by Jim Sharkey, 53, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, and then sandwiched between the two trucks.

Rescue crews struggled for nearly an hour to extricate Kea Williams from the wreckage. They transported her to Cooper University Hospital with serious injuries below her waist. She had just dropped her children off at day care when the accident occurred.

Jim Sharkey was also transported to Cooper University Hospital suffering neck and back pain.
Octavio Villegas was unharmed in the accident.

The accident involved eight vehicles and blocked southbound I-295 between exits 27 and 28 from shortly before 8 a.m. until 10:15.

Villegas will receive a receive a traffic summons for careless driving and other charges may be filed as New Jersey State Police investigate the accident and inspect the tractor-trailer.
