With winter still going strong, it’s a good time to talk about safety tips that help prevent outdoor slip and falls.
This time of year can be particularly dangerous for falls when parking lots, sidewalks and steps are covered in ice. Those people at risk for falls need to be especially cautious and aware of weather conditions. Below are some safety tips
— Always carry a cell phone with you, even if you are just checking the mail. Should you fall you will be able to call some right away.
— Wear proper footwear that has traction. If you need to wear dress shoes, take them with you and change once you get there. Don’t try to navigate icy conditions in the wrong shoes.
— Watch for wet floors and stairs due to melting snow. Spills are also a concern.
— Walk slowly and take small steps. Allow extra time when necessary.
— Use rails or other stable objects that you can hold onto to prevent a slip.
— If you do fall, make every effort to protect your head, neck and spine.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of safety tips. As an individual, you need to understand that no one can guarantee absolute safety. Be aware of your surroundings and try to avoid dangerous situations and places at all costs.
