The crash of a commuter train traveling from New York City to the Hoboken, NJ terminal has left more than thirty people suffering injuries.
According to The Huffington Post, the accident occurred about 8:30am on Sunday morning as the PATH train arrived at the Hoboken terminal. The train failed to stop, slamming into the bumpers at the end of the tracks.
Witnesses reported that the train had trouble braking as it entered the terminal. The train, carrying 90 some passengers, overshot the platform, crashed and sent the passengers flying forward from the impact.
More than thirty people sustained injuries, mostly bumps and bruises, and ambulances transported many to three area hospitals.
“People were stunned, but nobody was really going crazy or anything,” train passenger Tom Gordon, of Jersey City, told The Huffington Post. “I didn’t know what had happened at first.”
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who operates the PATH train, was working to restore service to two of the three tracks, but expected the one track to remain out of service until repairs could be made and a review by the National Transportation Safety Board completed.
“Mayor Zimmer thanks all of the agencies at the local, county, state and federal level for their very prompt response to this incident,” a press release on Hoboken’s website said.
At this time, the accident appears mechanical in nature. However, officials will test the train’s motorman for drugs and alcohol, as is standard procedure.
