People heading home from a Connecticut casino on a tour bus were injured in an early-morning crash this morning.
24 passengers and a driver suffered injuries in a bus accident on Wednesday while traveling from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT to Flushing, Queens
Captain Evelyn Mallard of the New York State Police told NBC New York that the bus was traveling on southbound Interstate 95 just before 6:30 am when it hit a center guardrail, then crossed three lanes and hit a concrete wall to the right side of the highway. There were no other vehicles involved.
A photo of the crash scene showed the casino name and Chinese writing prominently painted on the side of the bus. Star Tag, Inc., the bus operator, has a daily route between the casino and Flushing, Elmhurst and Chinatown.
Emergency responders from New Rochelle and New York City responded to the accident scene.
The bus was still rolling forward when State Police arrived and an officer placed his cruiser in front of the bus to stop its movement.
Police found the injured bus driver, 48year-old Wei Chen, about 150 yards behind the bus, but it was unclear whether the impact ejected him from the bus or he exited at some point. Police had difficulty communicating with Chen due to a language barrier.
All 24 passengers on board sustained injuries.
The Star Gazette reports that emergency services transported the passengers and driver to three area hospitals, Sound Shore Medical Center, Mount Vernon Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. It was raining and weather may have been a factor.
Chen had a valid driver license and Star Tag had no history of safety violations, according to The New York Daily News.
