GSK To Remove Zinc From Poligrip Products

Comments Off

GlaxoSmithKline announced today that it plans to stop manufacture of three versions of its denture adhesive Poligrip, until the company can reformulate the product without zinc.

Malesia Dunn, director of communications for GSK Consumer Healthcare, said the action affects three popular Poligrip products: Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care.

In a news advisory on its Web site, GSK wrote the following, ”We are taking these actions because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products.”

The advisory also notes, the products are safe when used as directed, but some consumers tend to use excessive amounts.

According to AP, GSK’s voluntary action comes as several lawsuits are poised to go to trial alleging patients suffered nerve damage, loss of balance and blood injuries from high levels of zinc contained in the products.

An estimated 30 million Americans wear dentures and use products such as Poligrip.
