Krasniy Oktyabr Inc. Recalls Herring "7 Uzlov" Due to Potential Contamination

Comments Off

The Krasniy Oktyabr Inc. is recalling packages of Herring of the Special Ambassador “7 Uzlov” because there is a potential that the product is contaminated with the bacterium that causes botulism. Botulism can cause respiratory and body paralysis, which can lead to death due to respiratory failure.

The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning.

Symptoms of botulism can include dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, slurred speech, drooping eyelids, and muscle weakness all down the body.

The Herring “7 Uzlov” was sold in retail stores all over New York City and the fish comes in a round metal container. The UPC code is 4-60556-000153 and the product was produced in Russia. So far Krasniy Oktyabr has not received any reports of illness from consumers.
