Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps recalled due to fire hazard

Comments Off

Parents and child caregivers should be aware of a recall involving fish tank and safari themed children’s lamps sold at major retailers nationwide and online.

California-based Innovage LLC has announced a recall of 300,000 Discovery Kids™ Animated Marine and Safari Lamps made in China because defective wiring can cause a fire or burn consumers. The importer has received eleven reports of these lamps short-circuiting, including three cases in which property damage occurred when the lamp caught on fire.

According to a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Innovage has identified the problem as electrical short-circuiting and sparking due to the placement of wiring near the circuit board.

Consumers may have purchased these Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps between June 2010 and March 2012 at Bed Bath & Beyond, Bonton, JCPenney, Kohls, Office Max or Toys "R" Us stores nationwide, or from the online retailers Amazon, Ideeli, JCPenney, Kohls, Macy's or Overstock.

They can identify the recalled lamps by their rectangular shape and rotating fish tank or safari animal scene. “Discovery Kids” is printed on the top-left corner on the front of the lamp. Consumers should look for the following model number on a sticker affixed to the bottom of the lamp or on the bottom of the packaging:

  • 1628626
  • 1642433
  • 1641522
  • 1641523
  • 1645729
  • 1645853

Recalled lamps will have an 11-digit batch number beginning with 584894 or 10128 molded in the plastic bottom and on the bottom of the packaging in addition to the listed model number.

Consumers who find they have a lamp affected by the recall should stop using it immediately. They can call (888) 232-1535 to request a full refund or visit Innovage’s lamp recall site for instructions.
