CPSC Issues Another Warning On Drop-Side Cribs; 32 Fatalities

Comments Off

In a statement issued Friday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is again warning parents and caretakers about the dangers associated with drop-side cribs.

In the last five years, CPSC has issued 11 recalls involving more than 7 million drop-side cribs due to suffocation and strangulation hazards.

CPSC is aware of 32 infant and toddler suffocation and strangulation deaths associated with drop-side cribs made by various manufacturers. The agency has received an additional 14 reports of infant fatalities due to entrapment, also related to drop-side cribs.

There will be new and improved mandatory federal standards for cribs this year, said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenebaum. Many manufacturers have already stopped making drop-sides in light of stricter regulations and a possible ban.
