A New York woman allegedly drove in the wrong direction – on Interstate 95 – for at least four miles before causing a crash that left one man dead.
The woman, 26, of Queens, is charged with second-degree manslaughter in a complaint filed in New Rochelle City Court on Monday. According to a spokeswoman, the driver was “in an intoxicated condition” when her minivan struck a car early Sunday morning.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was listed in fair condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. His passenger, 29, was killed in the accident.
According to the district attorney’s office, the results of drug and alcohol tests are pending. She could face additional charges if the tests show her blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
NYPD officers and state troopers tried but failed to flag down the woman from the northbound lanes seconds before the horrific 4:31 a.m. collision, a state police spokesman said.
The accident happened nearly two years to the day after eight people died in a wrong-way crash nearby on the Taconic State Parkway.

It's a pity that many wrong way crashes are caused by intoxicated drivers. These preventable accidents often create head on collisions which are one of the most fatal types of accidents there is.
