Schumer Proposes Federally Funded Teen Driver Education

Comments Off

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer proposed new legislation creating a federal curriculum that focuses on the hazards faced by teen drivers.

Nationwide over 5,000 teens are killed in automobile crashes; while 316 teens died in car accidents in New York City over the last five years.

The number of teens tragically killed in car accidents each year indicates that drivers’ education should not end once teens get their licenses, said Schumer. With affordable or free driver’s education courses not always available, it is imperative that communities are provided with increased resources that aggressively address the problem.

On Wednesday, Schumer proposed federally funded driver’s ed programs for students that have already obtained their license. The programs would be taught by local non-profit agencies like service organizations and churches, he said.
