Drivers are required to carry some sort of car insurance in most states that provides protection of the automobile by law. An essential part of being a responsible car owner involves protection of your car, through the proper insurance coverage; which should not only suit your needs it should also meet state requirements.

New York Automobile Insurance Requirements

In the state of New York, the insurance requirement is 25/50/10. The first two numbers refer to bodily injury limits which covers disease, sickness, injury and death. While the third number refers to property damage sustained to another person’s property.
To further explain, the first two numbers mean, in an accident, each injured person would receive a maximum up to 25,000 with only 50,000 allowed per accident. And the last number refers to the total coverage per accident for property damage and in this case it would be 10,000.

Although state minimum requirements need to be met, the amount of liability coverage should be enough to offer peace of mind while protecting your assets in the event of a bad accident. For example, if you have a multi-million-dollar home, you are at risk of losing it in a lawsuit if should your insurance coverage not be sufficient. Additional coverage can be bought with a Personal Umbrella.  In simple terms, a personal umbrella protects you from liability issues that go beyond the liability limits of standard insurance policies – both home and auto.
